Vimshottari Dasha: the 120-year timing engine

How the classical Vedic 120-year cycle turns your natal chart into a life timeline.

Vimshottari Dasha: the 120-year timing engine

Every Vedic astrology reading you've ever seen has a timing answer folded inside it. That's the job of Vimshottari Dasha — a system that takes your natal chart and divides your life into planetary periods so that each moment is under the "care" of a specific planet. Over 120 years, the nine planetary lords each get a turn, and their combined choreography is what turns a static chart into a life timeline.

The 120-year cycle

The full cycle runs for exactly 120 years, split unequally across the nine grahas:

  • Ketu — 7 years
  • Venus — 20 years
  • Sun — 6 years
  • Moon — 10 years
  • Mars — 7 years
  • Rahu — 18 years
  • Jupiter — 16 years
  • Saturn — 19 years
  • Mercury — 17 years

Add those up: 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 = 120. That's not a coincidence — Vimshottari (literally "120") was designed to cover a full human lifespan with a wide margin.

Where does your cycle start?

The starting point is your Moon's nakshatra at birth. The nakshatra your Moon sits in has a ruling lord — say Jupiter — and the fraction of that nakshatra the Moon had already traversed at your exact birth moment tells you how much of Jupiter's dasha had already elapsed. If the Moon was 40% of the way through Jupiter's nakshatra, then 40% of Jupiter's 16-year period was already spent before you were born, and Jupiter's remaining ~9.6 years is your first Mahadasha.

This is why your dasha "starts" as a partial period, and it's why the accuracy of your Moon's position (which changes by ~1° every 2 hours) demands accurate birth time.

Mahadasha, Bhukti, Antara, Sookshma

Each of the 9 Mahadashas ("big period") is subdivided into 9 Bhuktis (also called Antardashas — "sub-periods"), and each Bhukti is further subdivided into 9 Antaras, and so on. In practice, most readings work with the first two layers:

  • Mahadasha (MD) — the outer flavor. If Saturn is your MD, the whole 19-year arc has a Saturnine character: discipline, duty, delayed rewards, long structures.
  • Bhukti (BH) — the inner sub-period. Saturn MD with Jupiter BH is very different from Saturn MD with Mars BH — the outer discipline meets either expansion (Jupiter) or urgency (Mars).

The 9 lords × 9 sub-lords give 81 possible MD-BH pairs, each with its own tone. Lodestar's Dasha Guide lays out all 81 combinations if you want to browse the full grid.

Duration of a Bhukti

The length of any given Bhukti is proportional to both lords' years in the 120-cycle:

Bhukti_months = (MD_years × BH_years × 12) ÷ 120

So Saturn MD (19 yr) with Jupiter BH gets (19 × 16 × 12) / 120 = 30.4 months — about 2½ years. Saturn MD with Ketu BH? (19 × 7 × 12) / 120 = 13.3 months — a bit over a year. Each pair has its own duration.

Why Vimshottari is Lodestar's preferred timing system

There are other dasha systems in Vedic astrology (Yogini, Ashtottari, Chara). We use Vimshottari as the default for three reasons:

  1. Nakshatra-based. It's the only major system that uses your Moon's nakshatra as the anchor, which respects the classical Vedic emphasis on the mind (Moon) as the true seed of experience.
  2. Widely calibrated. More practitioners have field-tested Vimshottari against real life events than any other dasha system — the failure modes are well-known and adjustable.
  3. KP-compatible. KP astrology (see What is KP Astrology?) uses Vimshottari as its native timing engine, so the two layers stack cleanly.

What to do with your Vimshottari timeline

  • Look at the current MD and BH first. That's your "weather" for the next few months to years.
  • Note upcoming MD transitions. Big life pivots often cluster around a Mahadasha change — the year Saturn hands over to Mercury, say, is a re-shuffling year worth planning around.
  • Cross-check with the natal chart. A Jupiter Bhukti is generally auspicious, but only if Jupiter is well-placed in your natal chart. A debilitated Jupiter Bhukti behaves quite differently.

Lodestar computes your complete Vimshottari timeline out to 2075+, marks the current MD × BH window, and cross-checks the tone against the natal placements of both lords. If you'd like to see your own, compute your chart and pull up the timing card on the dashboard.
